Webcast on building BlogEngine.NET themes

by Mads Kristensen 19. July 2007 03:58

Earlier today, Al Nyveldt aired a webcast on how to make BlogEngine.NET themes. It really shows how you can leverage all the power of ASP.NET in your themes. He uses code-behind files to dynamically change the output of the posts using nothing but C#. He walks you through building an entirely new theme and he also made it available for download.

His approach with building a theme from scratch is impressive, but I must admit that I’m too lazy for that. I would probably copy an existing theme and just modify it. It would probably not be as good as his though.

Thanks for the link!

Actually, copying a theme is, by far, the easiest way to get started.  Most themes I've looked at use the same PostView.ascx and CommentView.ascx.  I don't think it effects the end result at all, other than possibly stifling creativity a bit.  (To be honest, all of my themes were made by modifying an existing theme, until the webcast was recorded.  Now I have 1 theme made from scratch.)

I decided to build it entirely from scratch as it seemed more instructive and allowed people to see what makes the different parts special.  I doubt I'll have convinced anyone to build themes from scratch, especially lazy coders like you. Smile
