Next stop Florida

Aug 28, 2008

Vacation! It’s that time of year again. Fourteen days of sunshine is waiting for me in Florida. It’s my first visit to Florida and it’ll be my 13th state with 37 to go.

First stop is Miami for a couple of days. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Miami and I’m looking forward to party like it’s nineteen ninety nine there. After that Fort Lauderdale, then across the state in a rented convertible and doing some snorkelling in the various marine parks all the way down to Everglades. After wrestling with alligators for a day we’re heading down to Key West to relax, party and enjoy some water sports. If time permits we’ve talked about visiting The Bahamas for a couple of days before returning to Miami. Amusement parks doesn’t interest us much, so we aren’t going to Orlando.

The summer is long gone here in Denmark and the whether has been very depressing for the last month or so. Florida will be just what the doctor ordered.

Thinking about it, 2008 has been my most travelled year ever and I’m not done travelling yet. Here’s a recap:

February: Brazil for the carnival (1 month)
March: Fishing in Sweden (2 days)
April: Bachelor party in Poland (2 days)
June: Barcelona (3 days)
September: Florida
October: New York City (4 days)
October: London for the FOWA conference (2 days)

Besides London, all travelling has been vacation. The next problem is figuring out where to go in 2009. My dilemma when choosing a destination is that I also choose not to go everywhere else.

Do you have any suggestions for things to see in Florida?

I know it sounds stupid, but I would actually very much like to experience a hurricane. From a safe distance of course.

How about Florida Keys, I have been there and it's very nice. Perhaps if Gustav and Hanna are there, you might want to keep your distance.

If you haven’t been to Walt Disney Wold Resort, then that’s a visit worth.

I envy you big time, Florida and USA is a great place to visit.

Something worth seeing in Florida is the Kennedy Space Center. In Bahamas, Atlantis is definitely a must see.

Have fun!

Well, this is not really a suggestion, but rather a guarantee of what you will see in Florida.

OLD PEOPLE

Ha! I'd recommend the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.

I'd say, especially after having lived in Florida, don't go to Orlando.  It's a joke of a city.  Just rather boring, especially if you aren't into amusement parks.

If you want to check some cool things out hit up Tampa & St Augustine.  Both are great places to just chill out and relax by, on, or near the water.

You could go up toward the panhandle too and see Panama or Pensacola, but wouldn't truly suggest heading up that way.  I'd stick to the peninsula.

Good luck on finding cool stuff, and no matter what have a ton of fun!  Smile

btw - Hurricanes (I've sat through 3) are really nice if one doesn't live somewhere directly in front of the water.  I lived for years in southern Mississippi about 30 minutes from the water.  Father made a point to purchase a house on the highest ground we could find, which meant we were about 33ft. above sea level.

Once a tree fell on the house, another time it took the fence out on the eastern side of the back yard.  The last hurricane didn't really do much.  Hurricanes aren't really anything more than a good regular storm down in the souther eastern US, the only difference is you get the eye of the storm.

The eye of the storm is probably the most tranquil, surreal, and strange thing to be in.  I've been in the eye once, my parents were still living there when the eye of Hurricane Katrina went over the house.  Often since one can easily tell when the hurricane winds will start up again we'd go sit out on the porch.  Absolutely beautiful.  Not a sound to be heard, even the neighbors down the street would come and sit on the porches.  Then after about 20-30 minutes we'd hear a gust or howl of wind and would know to return inside and hunker down.

The most notable thing I remember is the cracking of falling trees, and of course, reading a TON right before, during, and after the hurricane.  Then everyone bands together afterwards and cleans the neighborhood up.  First our own, then we'd go check out others and help out were we could.  Overall, a very interesting experience.

How much vacation time do you get?  We're lucky if we get 3 weeks here.

@Frank,

We get 5 weeks in Denmark per year. This is clearly not enough by a long shot Smile
