BlogEngine.NET Christmas update

Dec 17, 2008

Some exiting things have been going on with BlogEngine.NET lately.

Theme-pack

13 new and very slick looking themes have been cleaned up, bundled and released on CodePlex. Since we decided not to include more than a couple of themes with BlogEngine.NET 1.4 we knew a theme-pack was necessary. Thanks to Janko for gathering the themes and cleaning them up. Download the theme-pack.

.NET 3.5 and Visual Studio 2008

The current version 1.4.5 is the last official version on .NET 2.0 and in Visual Studio 2005. Right now the team is already working in Visual Studio 2008 and will upgrade to .NET 3.5 during Christmas. A lot of people asked for this, so now we are giving it to you.

Windows Live Writer 2009

Al Nyveldt has been in contact with the Windows Live Writer team to ensure that the BlogEngine.NET will support the new features of WLW 2009 and vica versa. Only BlogEngine.NET and Wordpress has been given special attention by the WLW team which we are very proud about. Read more on Al’s blog.

TinyMCE upgrade

For those of us who don’t use Windows Live Writer, but prefer the online HTML editor, there is good news. We are upgrading the TinyMCE implementation to the newest version and it should work much smoother. It’s not only prettier, it’s also better. Hopefully, this will happen over Christmas as well.

This is great news. Do you, by any chance, happen to know how to fix the syndication.axd causing "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" exceptions?

Will you start using .NET 3.5 features? Or can I recompile it targetting 2.0?

I ask because my hosting provider does not have .NET 3.5 installed yet

@Juan,
The 1.5 release will not use 3.5 features so you should be safe with your hosting provider for now.

Great work!

Is there some way we can preview the themes without having to download everything?

not seeing the big deal with 2008 upgrade if there are no 3.5 enhancements planned yet - get the source and open it in VS 2008 - the conversion wizard will upgrade it for you in a few minutes.
I am .NET developer but am trying wordpress out because of all the plugins. Most (i'm finding out) are garbage but a few gems out there. I would rather go .NET - maybe we can make equivalent functionality for the most popular wordpress plugins????

Seconding Anthony's comment: in the v1.3 days, this page -- http://dotnetblogengine.net/page/themes.aspx -- had screenshots of all the themes. Are there plans to update the screenshots to include the new ThemePack themes?

Great to hear that BlogEngine development continues. I've just moved my blog from Subtext to BlogEngine 1.4.5. Aside from not all tags showing up in the tag cloud, it's all working great so thanks for all your work and I hope you like the Dark Neon theme I've adapted your standard theme into.
