AJAX used the right way

Mar 19, 2006

I find AJAX to be a great way of combining server-side and client-side experiences. Its' the perfect example of synergy, where the whole experience is greater than the sum of it's parts. Having said that, a lot of websites over-use it to such an extent that the only real purpose have been to show of. Pelle Svane explained this AJAX show off phenomenon.

Doing it right
The new image search engine at live.com is a perfect example of doing it right. It is very user friendly, good designed and, most importantly, very simple to use. Microsoft have been getting it real lately, and that's nice to see.

Hi;

I have read q number of blogs abt live.com, q number out there complaining the slow loading and overuse of ajax on live.com ... btw, what do u think of another ajax-based search engine?, http://askalexia.com , only available with web, image searches, still new in BETA Smile, I think this is a simple google-like UI+speed+ajax?

ky, you can get to a clean version of the live.com search engine at http://search.live.com. It is as fast as google, but much nicer. The only "bug" is that the search field is not given focus when you load the page, so you manually have to place the cursor in the field before you can write your search term. I imaging this is because live.com is still in beta and will be fixed.

asklexia.com is pretty darn fast as well, but I see no real difference from google. That fact that it is made with AJAX does not, IMO, make it cool. I do like it though, the same way i like google, not because it is Web 2.0 as it claims to be.

Smile thanks for the comments on askalexia.com , something that I don't like live.com is the image search shows NO boundary between result pages , but I guess this is what ajax is supposed to be Smile  btw askalexia.com is now available with video search .... Smile more services will be added Smile

I think that live.com is even cooler than google.com/ig. The only thing I find a bit worrysome is that it can actually make my browser (IE!) crash? I think the image search is way better than google images!
